Mr Plow,
My husband tried to put a blow torch to our blower to burn up the newspaper.  It didn't work. Any ideas on how to dissolve the newspaper?
Signed Mrs. Newspaper

Dear Mrs Newspaper,
There is a small bolt (called shear pins) in each side of the auger. Remove those bolts. This should allow the paper to be removed. When reinstalling those bolt, only snug them.No tip for the paper boy this month. Since most snow throwers or snow blowers have gasoline engines, tell your husband to lose the light the news paper on fire idea.I hope everyone got through this ordeal safely.
Regards,
Mr. Plow

MR PLOW,
I am writing this in concern to my new lawn tractor. I purchased a john deere 235 and a snow plow. I never plowed before. a guy at work told me that with a stone driveway you could put a piece of pvc pipe on the bottm of the plow. It helps to keep so you dont dig up rocks. did you ever here of this. or do you know where I could find out about this on the internet.

D.E.

Hi DE,
He is not far off. There is a device that slides over the plow cutting edge. It attaches to the wear shoe bracket. It appears to be made from steel pipe. I have some info on it , but I have no clue as to where. Sorry, I was not more help.
Regards,
M.P.

Mr Plow;
Hi, I'm located in the southeast corner of IN. where OH, KY and IN. all meet. I'm right smack on the Ohio River, thus our snowfall here is about 1/2 what you've seen in the news recently about the 20"-31" Indiana "snow storm" last week. In other words, snows in the river valley are less than just 10 mi. north.
Anyway.....I want a 7'6" plow for my 1994 Chevy 1500 half ton 4x4 standard cab pick up with a V-6. A new Boss Plow here is like $4k installed. I can't really drop that right now (I'm self employed in pest control, business very slow right now). Can you recommend where I might find a good used plow (slightly on the commercial grade side) right away ? The truck supply  companies have plows but no mounting brackets (all sold out in this region I'm told). I'm hoping to cash in on any remaining snows we may get here, not just for my personal driveway use. Yeah, I know the truck is kinda sissy for commercial plowing, but it's what I have for now. I noticed no plows of my type on your website.
Casey Rayls Rising Sun

Dear Casey,
Here in CA. we drag the snow onto the beach in our orange bathing suits.
Actually most Northern Sierra hiways are closed due to blizzard conditions. We are running on generator backup and eating out of the freezer as I write.
I like the SnoWay plow especially the brand new series. You will have to wait for more on that.
From Joe Bonnell he might have a Western. With used plows you run what you find. Try to get one off the same make and year truck. Withhold a portion of the payment until you know you have ALL the parts.
The free papers in 7-11 or AM-PMs might be a good place to look.

M.P.

Dear Sir...
I am looking for some help on a subject about snowblowers and I hope you can help. I saw your website and figured that you know a whole lot more about snowblowers than I do.
My mom is all alone during the winter months and she has an ATLAS snoblower that just quit on her. I can't help her because I am away at college, and she's not in the best of health and I don't want her breaking her back trying to shovel our driveway. She told me the other day that the snowblower broke after 6 years and it's an ATLAS like I've said already.
Trouble was the belt was broken, and my brother told her to find the manual and see what size belt it needed and where the nearest dealer was. Trouble is, I've spent most of the day on the Internet looking for a website or some article about ATLAS snowblowers and I can't find a thing. She can't find her manual and I don't even know if they still make ATLAS snowblowers. So maybe you've heard of them.. or maybe you know if they're still in business. I would greatly appreciate your help in my search because I'm about to give up! It needs to get fixed or she's going to have to continually shovel the inches of snow that never seem to stop.
Thanks,
Elizabeth H :-)

Hi Elizabeth H,

Can she retrieve the broken belt?
Automotive belt stores have belts for snow blowers. Goodyear belts for blowers are GREEN in color. Do not let them sell her a black one, or one with a green stripe. These will slip.
If she can not find the old one, have her put a cord or some tape around the pulleys and cut their ends even. See could take the cord or tape to the belt store. If she tells them if it was in the pulleys like a small cord would, or on top like tape would, they should be able to sell her a belt. I do not know where Atlas is, and they are not in the S.I.M.A registry.

Trecan makes Portable and In-ground Snow melters

SNOW: What is it good for?
An article by: Tom Edgman

Friday after Thanksgiving, I was watching the television news. People were trampling each other trying to get into stores in order to give their money away. Being a snow professional, I wondered. If you had a K Mart store and a Wal-Mart store on the same block, and 20% of the K Mart parking places were covered in snow, where would the people go?
In winter resort towns like Truckee, CA. or Vail, CO., they charge over a buck an hour to park downtown. What happens to the money, from the snow cover spaces? Snow doesn’t pay to park.
Snow, what is it good for? I used to say, you can make money pushing it or blowing it out of the way. With cities getting so big, where do they put it? You can make some money hauling it away. The high cost of fuel, the equipment, and man power needed, would customers pay that much? Not to mention the men, the trucks, the loaders, the book keeping, the tax (IRS) issues- boggles my brain thinking about it. How would my company survive a winter if it didn’t snow with so many equipment payments?
Spring comes along and melts it, but it is long wait from November to spring. Can we make spring come early? Can we melt the snow downtown and in shopping centers without melting the snow on the ski runs? Some people tell me snow is good to ski on, and that ski resorts charge money for people to ski on it. I hear they even spend money to make it, for skiers to slide down on.
Is snow good to melt? Why, yes it is. With commercial real estate needs and our growing population; we are requiring more open space and less snow storage areas. The time is here to seriously think about melting snow for your customers, and maybe even for the former snow plowing competition. They could push snow into handy little piles for you to come along and melt the snow for them. You would of course bill them for doing so…

You could maybe reduce your fleet to one truck, one melter, one loader and one of those fancy pickups with the heated seats.
I think now I know what snow is really good for; melting.

MR PLOW,

I am going to buy a used vehicle & attach a snow plow to do residential driveways in Indianapolis.  What are some of the best/recommended vehicles to use for this?  What are some vehicles that I should stay away from? What are some recommended snow plows for residential snow plowing?  I would prefer something that could eventually be taken off of one vehicle and put on another when vehicle is replaced. What are the most popular vehicles used for residential snow plowing?
T.O.

Hi T.O.,
This question is a little tough since I don't know where you are.
Survey says :
1)  3/4 ton short wheel base, reg. cab pickups (high snow areas)
2)  1/2 ton short wheel base, reg. cab pickups (moderate snow areas)
3)  mid / compact short wheel base pickups (low snow areas or areas with restricted mobility)

Every time the truck factory changes the frame design, the plow makers have to design a new mounting kit. So odds are you will need a new mounting kit, when you change plow kits.

Regards,
M.P.

Dear Sir,
I own an Atlas Snow Chief Snow Blower which is approx. 21 years old and the belt that drives the auger needs to be changed but I cannot figure out how to get to it.  I have the owner’s manual but it does not give any type of information on changing the belts.  Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi Matt,
Most snow blower belts are changed by splitting the unit. Remove gas cap - place a baggie over gas neck - reinstall gas cap (this keeps you from spilling gas) look for and remove any belt covers or guards in the area near the center of the machine there should be two bolts (or 4) holding the machine together. Remove the bolts while someone holds the handle bars carefully have them lower the handle bars pay attention to how belts are routed use snowblower belts (often they are green) look for the numbers on the belt. We may be able to help you get belts with the numbers or exact measurements. Change all the belts in the center housing with reverse procedure.

M.P.

Mr. Plow,

I recently heard that our airport has a "snow melter" What is a snow melter?

There are two things commonly called snow melters. One are chemical compounds like calcium chloride that melt snow by heat released by evaporation. Common rock salt works this way also.
What I think your friend was talking about is a commercial snow melter. This is a fuel fired device that actually turns the snow to water to be drained off. These machines also separate sand, salts and other environmental hazards from that water. This way there is no risk of fines or environmental damage.
Many airport use de-icing fluids to keep ice from forming on aircraft wings. These de-icing fluids can also be removed from the snow and recycled for reuse. Snow melters also free up valuable real estate that was once use for snow storage for other uses, such as parking. It is common to see snow melters that are built into the ground or building facility, and portable units mounted on large trailers. Self propelled units are also available.
Mr. Plow

Hi Mr. Plow,
I hope you can help me with this problem.
Our condo development in Calgary, Alberta, does not have any place for storing snow. Hauling off snow by truck costs us $1000/snowfall. I was wondering whether we could devise a solution like that I have seen in Calgary when streets are cleared of high banks of plowed snow -- the snow is dumped into a mobile vat and melted off -- goes away as steam. Do you know of any such equipment available? (We could melt it and run it down the sewer, too).
Thanks for your ideas!
Karen
Hi Karen,
The product you are looking for is a snow melter. We sell snow melters by Trecan. Trecan is a Canadian company so the exchange rate is not a factor. Talking to the engineers at the factory wll help determine your size requirements. Trecan makes movable, self-propelled and stationary in-ground units, and they can even be rigged to reclaim deicers at airports. They are a great solution for parking structures and in areas where snow storage is limited.
