I have a 2001 Chevy
2500HD Crew Cab, 8100 engine. Can I put a snow plow on it or should I have
gotten the factory prep package?

Thank you for your
help in advance.

Yes, you can put a plow on it. It is always best to have the snow plow prep package, however most of the same features are in the towing package.

Features that are commonly found in snow plow prep packages are stiffer torsion bars or springs, Power steering cooler, higher capacity battery, a relay to isolate the trucks electrical system ( Bosch relays are available at automotive electric component outlets, and are easy to install )
Typically, a snow plow prep package contains a combination of the following:
HD Battery or dual batteries
HD alternator
HD axle
Different tires
HD front suspension (stiffer torsion bars)

I would suggest that you lean toward the lighter snow plows to save your truck from excessive wear and tear. Be careful that you do not exceed any of your axle ratings ( listed on your driver's door jam.)

You may find that you will want a larger battery, especially if the plow tends to be slow.

Special note: When the plow slows down, it may also indicate several other hydraulic-electrical related problems.

Some plowers use a relay to isolate the truck's electrical system. Bosch relays are available at automotive electric component outlets, and are easy to install. If unsure, check with a qualified installer.

To save wear and tear on your frame and axle, I suggest you add a set of Timbren springs. They're easy to install and will sit between your frame and axle so the two never slam into each other, and shouldn't affect your ride.

If you're still concerned, you may want to call the manufacturer's tech. department. In my experience, the majority of snow plows are installed on trucks without snow plow packages. Contractors tend to be spontaneous!
Great info. Thanks!
