Q: Can spit or coffee freeze in mid air before it hits the ground when dumped in places like Antarctica?

A: Yes, the frigid air of locations such as Antarctica and the Arctic can freeze small volumes of liquid, such as spit or a small amount of coffee, almost instantaneously. In fact, I have heard of people traveling in the Yukon near the North Pole forming "ice beards" due to their spit freezing quickly on their facial hair. In order for this to occur, temperatures have to be well below zero. On a side note, Eskimo couples do not kiss like typical Americans do because the frigid air would cause their lips to freeze together. Instead, they touch each other's nose to show affection while avoiding being frozen together at the lips.
