Hi
Tom.
I am in Florida now. Not plowing any more. I can
tell you some
stories from the old days, but it has been a while since I got up at
midnight and plowed till the next day! Nothing is more beautiful and
peaceful than a town under a blanket of snow. I really miss that.
I ran
a snow removal route in Montclair NJ for many years, sold it and the
equipment and moved to Sarasota Florida. I was surprised to find your
site, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
In my
old snow days we plowed with: 46
CJ2a , 49 CJ3a , 59 CJ5 , 65 CJ5
All
of the above were 4 bangers with t-90 crash boxes. You either ran the
heater or ran the defroster, because with Willys you couldn't get
enough heat and air flow to do both! Oh for the days of vacuum wipers
that stopped when you were going up hill in a storm!!
Also
used:
Willys
FC 170
62 Willys Pickup
72 CJ5 w/ 304 v8
I
used monarch lifts exclusively. The Hy-Lo unit was the most trouble
free piece of equipment ever made. I ran them as belt driven, and used
a longer fan belt to run them instead of that awful Gates # 2210 belt
that would break at the worst times.
We
would chain all four wheels, peerless cross bar chain, load the snow
blowers in the back, load up the thermos and out we went. I sure miss
it,, wish I was up there now.
Also
ran a 69 FWD with 10' plow for the town. The jeeps were more agile,
quicker, and never got bogged down as long as we chained all wheels. If
we broke a chain, I chained the front only.
It
was great fun and great money then.
Regards
from sunny Sarasota,
Tom Fastiggi
